The start of the T20 Blast means that the British summertime is finally here, and there’s no better way to enjoy the sunshine than getting down to Edgbaston to watch the Birmingham Bears. This season, the Bears will be looking to win a second T20 title, with their previous success coming back in 2014 at Edgbaston against the Lancashire Lightning.
Since then, the Bears have reached the final on just one occasion, as they were beaten by the Notts Outlaws in 2017. But, could their fortunes be about to change in 2022?
Bears 2021 Season
It was a slightly disappointing campaign for the Bears in 2021, as they snuck into the playoffs after finishing fourth in the North Group. The Bears finished just a point clear of local rivals Worcestershire Rapids, but had suffered six defeats in 14 regular-season games.
The Bears saw their luck run out in the quarterfinals of the T20 Blast, as they were beaten by 21 runs by the Kent Spitfires, who would later go on to win the T20 Blast at Edgbaston. Jake Lintott top scorer for the Bears in that defeat, as he scored 41 runs from 20 balls. Meanwhile, Tim Bresnan took four wickets from 26 balls.
Bears 2022 Schedule
The Bears kick-started their season on June 5th with a one-run victory against Notts Outlaws. However, the fixtures begin to intensify over the coming weeks and months, as they face off against the Yorkshire Vikings on Friday 10th, Derbyshire Falcons on Sunday, June 19th, and Worcestershire Rapids on Friday, June 24th.
For the first half of the season, the Bears will not come up against teams from the South Group, which includes the Essex Eagles, Sussex Sharks, and Somerset. Meaning that all 14 group stage games will be played against teams in the North Group. Those teams can be found below:
- Derbyshire Falcons
- Durham
- Lancashire Lightning
- Leicestershire Foxes
- Northants Steelbacks
- Notts Outlaws
- Worcestershire Rapids
- Yorkshire Vikings
