Jake’s Barbers

Although it was opened in 1991 by Colin Fitzpatrick, Jake’s Barbers is a time machine back to the early 20th century. The shop is located in an Edwardian square near to St Paul’s square, and the interior is a veritable gallery of art and antiques, with the oldest dating back to 1910. The 17-foot high ceilings and vast natural light, you can take in the Pop Art pieces signed by David Bowie, The Who, Paul Wellar and Ocean Colour Scene while you wait. Jake’s, named for Colin’s son, was the first in the new wave of gentleman’s barbers in Birmingham. They use the clipper, scissors, and comb technique, honed through a combined 50 years of experience between Colin and Gary Monington, who joined the team soon after Jake’s was opened.

Colin and Gary were both Vidal Sassoon trained, and have as such taken influence from the past 100 years of men’s grooming, adding a modern flair. The experience is professional yet relaxed, with consultancy being offered for those who want to change their style but need some advice as to how to go about it. They provide just 3 services: a dry cut and finish for £19, a shampoo, cut and finish for £20, or a beard trim for only £3. Simple, affordable, but still the highest quality.

The Barber House

At The Barber House, you will be getting luxury and skill, all while spending your time in a place that, despite opening in 1995, could easily be mistaken for an upmarket 1950s diner. But instead of a milkshake and fries, you’ll receive the highest quality hairstyling and a deluxe experience. The barbers here pride themselves on a clean cut no matter what style you have, and they have the portfolio to prove it. They stock only the finest products, including American Crew, Dapper Dan, and their new own label: The Barber House.

Every haircut is a multi-step process, with steam preparation, hot towel application, and soaps, moisturisers and oils. They finish with a hot water cut throat razor shave around the neck line, removing the hair around the ears with a flame, and a splash of aftershave. All this for only £32, with options for a traditional cut throat shave or a complete restyle for just a few quid more. Their beard services range from an express service at £17.50 to precision colouring or sculpting. To finish it all off, they even have a shoe shining service for only £8, so you can look dapper from head to toe.

Shepherds

Shepherds is the new kid on the block, having been opened only 5 years ago by David Sturgeon. But don’t think that means you’ll be getting an inferior cut. Rather, David has been barbering since he was 18 in 2002, and went on to service people all around the world, including celebrities like Samuel L. Jackson for the BAFTAs and Harry Styles during London Men’s Fashion Week.

They offer possibly the most lavish barber experience you will ever have. The service is tailored to your personal needs and desires, using a mix of classic and modern influences. The luxury full service is the ultimate in haircare, taking nearly 2 hours and combining the wash, cut, shave, and hot towel with D.R. Harris and Arlington products. This service starts at £80, depending on your barber, but it’s a treat that’s worth the cost. You can opt for the more affordable wet or dry haircut for £25-£45, or a beard trim or scalp scrub instead. They even have options for kids and ladies, which is rare in the gentlemen’s barber scene.
