Organic or Synthetic?

Synthetic fabrics can have a very smooth finish like satin, ideal for catching the light and drawing the eye. Satin-style cushion covers can be surprisingly durable and they’re also easy to clean. Many synthetic cushion covers can go straight into the washing machine.
However, most natural fabrics are also highly durable plus they can be naturally hypoallergenic. If you have people in your home with allergies, organic textiles like cotton, linen, or even silk are best. But it’s worth noting that they can be more expensive than their synthetic alternatives.
Polyester Cushions
Polyester is one of the most common materials for cushion covers and fillings. It’s relatively inexpensive and versatile, with textile manufacturers using it to create bouncy, light filling, or even down alternatives. Actual down feathers can gather dust and are tricky to maintain which is why plenty of people opt for synthetic alternatives.
For cushion covers, polyester is easy to dye and print on, although some textile manufacturers prefer cotton as the printing quality can be higher. Polyester cushion covers also have some water resistance so can be ideal for busy homes with children and pets where spills are likely.

If you want an all-natural fabric that’s even more durable than cotton, linen is ideal. It has a slightly rougher texture that’s ideal for more rustic interiors, especially shabby chic or vintage styles. However, it rarely comes in bright, vivid shades so you may find fewer choices in terms of colour. Linen can be treated and used for outdoor cushions as this sturdy fabric tends to withstand sunlight without fading.
Wool Cushion Covers
Wool is also a natural fabric, but this one is animal-based so it’s unsuitable for vegans. Most wool comes from sheep, however, you can also find fabrics made from rabbit hair, like angora. The texture of wool ranges from coarse to exceptionally soft, plus it’s naturally bacteria-resistant and discourages dust mites. In rare cases, some people have wool allergies or sensitivities, causing itching or even sniffles and watery eyes. If you notice these symptoms after being around wool, don’t invest in this fabric for your home interiors. Super-soft merino wool could be beneficial for people with eczema, though, according to some studies.
Specialist Fabrics Like Chenille
For an extra touch of luxury, many homemakers opt for fabrics with a noticeable pile like velvet or chenille. You can often brush these fabrics in one direction or the other to slightly change the colour of the cushions. They’re snuggly to cuddle up next to on the sofa or your bed. But they can also elevate the look of a room by adding opulence and elegance.
