Tensions were high as we entered the final ever episode of Peaky Blinders, as the fate of Tommy Shelby hung in the balance. However, not for the first time, the leader of the gang had a plan in place to ensure not only his future, but that of his family. But after months of fans speculating about the final series, we finally got all the answers we were desperate for.
Beware, spoilers are ahead in this article, so if you aren’t up to date with the final episode then you may be best suited to reading after you have caught up. But, what did we learn as we bid a fond farewell to Peaky Blinders on the small screen?
Polly’s Prophecy Comes True
Throughout the final series of Peaky Blinders, we were reminded of Aunt Polly’s belief that there would be a war in the family between Tommy and Michael, but only one of them would survive. This prophecy would eventually play out on doorstep of Newfoundland, Canada, as the American gang led by Uncle Jack met up with Tommy to exchange cash. It would be the first time that Tommy and Michael came face to face since Tommy put Michael in jail.
The Americans’ plan was simple, as they were going to explode the car that Tommy would travel in. However, the plan backfired, as Johnny Dogs was on hand to move the bomb out of Tommy’s car and into the Americans, leading to a showdown between the two cousins. Michael was stunned that Tommy was still alive, and the war in the family eventually came to an end as Tommy shot Michael in the face, which in turn enabled Alfie Solomans to take control of Chicago.
Tommy Isn’t Dying
Peaky fans were given a shock midway through the final season, as it was revealed by Dr Holford that Tommy has tuberculoma and had just months to live. The entirety of the final episode was spent with Tommy wrapping up loose ends and making sure that his family would be fine after he passed away. He allowed his son to leave with Lizzie, before encouraging Ada to get into politics.
However, the final scenes in the final episode would see Tommy’s late daughter visit him as he was preparing to commit suicide, as she revealed that he wasn’t even ill. Tommy was encouraged to light another fire and see that he needed to live. Just as he did that, he saw a newspaper article from Oswald Mosley’s wedding, which pictured his doctor, alongside Mosley and Adolf Hitler. Realising that he had been lied to, and that he wasn’t even sick, Tommy paid a visit to his former doctor, before sparring his life.
Duke Has A Big Future Planned
Another big story to come out of the final series was the emergence of Tommy’s long-lost son Duke. Tommy immediately brought his estranged son into the fold, and seemingly has big plans. Duke was tasked with helping clear out Tommy’s house, and also commanded to shoot Billy Grade, who the gang discovered was the traitor revealing their secrets.
It also turns out that Duke was trusted more than Finn, who was pushed out of the family after failing to realise Billy was betraying the gang. The rivalry between Duke and Finn is far from over too, with the latter vowing to get revenge on the family member that has seemingly replaced him in the gang. That’s certainly something to watch when the film is released in the future.
