During the first 2020 lockdown, engagement with classical music soared, and through the noise noticed. They decided to take action and spread the accessibility and diversity of classical music through their noisenights events; informal club performances from a variety of soloists. So far, the events have been selling out across London, but this Autumn, they will be coming to Birmingham.

through the noise are an incredible unique company that uses crowdfunding to keep their events affordable and accessible, as well as allowing patrons to choose which concerts they want and get priority tickets for future events. The company also works with various London charities to run live music projects for mental health. Their choice of location is just as important as their performers. Inspired by underground club scenes, noisenights take place in intimate club and gig venues rather than the typical grand halls, redefining what classical music can be in the modern age.

If all this sounds like your kind of scene, then set a date in your calendars for Wednesday 30th November 2022, because through the noise will be debuting outside of London for the first time with noisenight14 at Mama Roux’s in Digbeth. This venue is loved by locals and has featured performances by The Academic and Swim Deep, as well as regular circus, cabaret, and disco nights. At noisenight14, there will be two performances: a one-hour evening set at 7pm, and a later show at 9pm which will be followed by more live acts of jazz, funk, and afrobeats to round out the night and add to the speakeasy vibe. The night will feature two amazing young classical musicians: Harry Baker and Sheku Kanneh-Mason.

Harry Baker is an award-winning pianist, performing and composing both jazz and classical music. He has been featured on BBC Radio 3 and Jazz FM, as well as performing at popular London venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. Sheku Kanneh-Mason is an amazing cellist who in 2016 became the first black musician to win the BBC Young Musician competition. He has performed with many orchestras, including the London Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony. He has been a fixture of every BBC Proms since 2017, and has performed at the BAFTAs twice. But he is likely most well-known for his beautiful solo during at the royal wedding in 2018, bringing his talents to almost 2 billion people and making him a household name.

Of this upcoming performance, Kanneh-Mason has said: “I am really excited to be performing this programme with Harry Baker in such a unique venue. As performers we respond so much to the space we are in, not just acoustically, but the energy of the room and the people in it. This will be a special opportunity to share music we love in a new setting.”
