F.A Cup: Midlands Roundup

The past weekend was entertaining for Football fans across Birmingham, with Blues and Villa proving to the nation their abilities on live television and noisy neighbours West Brom had a dramatic last-gasp thriller!

An Absolute Screamer

Birmingham City hosted a 6th placed Premier League Newcastle United side in a 3 – 2 loss to the Toon Army, the visitor’s Premier League class was almost matched by the League 1 Blues side that is soaring at the top of the table. Ethan Laird scored within the first minute of play, leaving the neutrals having wished they had visited a btc  online casino before kick-off! Joe Willock and Callum Wilson then tainted this initial good start to make it 2- 2. Joe Willock nets a brace to make it 3 – 2 to United. But credit to this Blues side who proved they can hang with the Premier League clubs. The goal scored by Tomiki Iwata was an absolute screamer, the half volley from outside of the Newcastle box will go down in history as one of the greatest F.A Cup goals in recent history.

Marcus Rashford Impresses Villa Park

Aston Villa and Spurs battled it out at Villa Park, Jacob Ramsey scored within the first minute alike their Blue rivals across the other side of the City, with Villa managing to hold out to beat a struggling Spurs side 2 – 1. Marcus Rashford debuted for Aston Villa and put on a great performance, ducking the bad press thrown at him. It was a pleasure to watch Rashford be able to prove himself again, here in the city of Birmingham. His class will certainly be appreciated by the Villa Park faithful, unlike the Old Trafford residents. Mathys Tel’s injury time goal for Tottenham Hotspur proved to be a consolation only as Aston Villa progress to the next round of the F.A Cup.

He’s In Your Head

But it was Black Country cousins West Brom who were making all the noise just the other side of the border on the Birmingham Road, The Baggies hosted Sheffield Wednesday in what was initially a mediocre Championship game. Debutant Adam Armstrong’s impressive first-touch finish was equalised by the Owls in injury time, and the sorrow began to pour out of The Hawthorns. But this sorrow was soon handed right back to the Yorkshire fanbase when Jayson Molumby backheeled a corner kick into the back of the Brummie Road End net! The crowd erupted in a chant of “he’s in your head, Molumby!” to The Cranberries classic hit single. This late drama soon took a sour turn as players clashed in the middle of the field, with Kyle Bartley getting a straight red card for striking an opposition player. Can The Baggies continue from this dramatic momentum and persist in their push for promotion?

Feeling the Pressure

Elsewhere Walsall lost in a 2 – 1 defeat at Colchester United, with Taylor Allen gaining a red card you have the feeling this Walsall side are experiencing some turbulance. Walsall have managed only one win in five games in League Two, despite still sitting top of the table. Hopefully the Saddlers can manage to get back to winning ways, as Notts County and Doncaster Rovers are edging closer to the summit and Walsall must be feeling the pressure now.
