The highly anticipated Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be held between July 28 and August 8 2022 in Birmingham, is fast approaching and plans for the triathlon event have now been revealed.

The three-part race which involves running, swimming, and cycling is to be held in the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield in Northeast Birmingham on Friday, July 29 and Sunday, July 31.

The triathlon will begin with a 750 metre swim in Sutton Park’s Powell’s Pool, followed by a 20 kilometre four-lap cycle around the Boldmere neighbourhood, and completed with a 5 kilometre run on a tree-lined loop through Sutton Park that ends back at the Powell’s Pool starting point where the athletes will receive their medals.

Not only is the event intended to showcase the beauty of the largest urban park in Europe (a National Nature Reserve) which spans 2,200 acres, it will highlight the best of Sutton’s Boldmere neighbourhood as the cycle route passes its trendy high street.

Between the men’s and women’s triathlon, paratriathlon, and the triathlon mixed team relay (comprising of two men and two women), there will be a total of five events taking place in Sutton Coldfield.

The plans to hold the triathlon in Sutton Coldfield have been received with great support. As one of the most-watched events in the Commonwealth Games, it offers an exciting opportunity to highlight Birmingham’s suburban assets.

The council leader for the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield commented: ”As a whole, this is a significant opportunity for the business community and Boldmere more specifically”.

The counsellor urges Birmingham City Council and the event organisers to encourage live spectators to explore Boldmere and the rest of Sutton Coldfield.

Boldmere Futures Partnership’s secretary Paul Long announced their involvement with the Commonwealth Games organising committee and Birmingham City Council to plan the event.

In doing so, the partnership has applied for a Creative Communities grant of £20,000 for a public artwork in Boldmere that will memorialise the event for the community for years to come.

The partnership has also revealed it will hand out chalk to local residents so they can decorate the pavements and create art trails through Boldmere for spectators to enjoy as they explore the area.

As well as Sutton Coldfield, the Commonwealth Games 2022 will be held in other locations across Birmingham and the Midlands including Cannock Chase Forest, Sandwell, Perry Barr, and Edgbaston.
