Commonwealth Games 2022: Alexander Stadium Set To Host Epic Closing Ceremony

It has been a thrilling ten days or so in Birmingham, but as the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end. The 2022 Commonwealth Games will be remembered for being one of the most inclusive in the history of the event, with para and non-para events included in the Commonwealth programme for the first time ever.

Meanwhile, the Games will also be remembered for offering more women’s medals than men’s. But, locals in the city will be looking forward to an action-packed final day on Monday, culminating in the Closing Ceremony, which will be held at Alexander Stadium.

Final Medals To Be Handed Out

While many of the events have concluded, there will still be medals to be handed out on the final day of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Already on day eleven, there has been more success in the diving for England, with Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix winning her third gold of the games in the synchronised 10m platform. Elsewhere, England’s men managed to end their hockey campaign on a high with a bronze medal match win against South Africa.

The athletics programme drew to a dramatic conclusion on Sunday evening, with England’s win in the 4x400m relay later overturned after a lane infringement. The final gold medals to be awarded at Birmingham 2022 come in the forms of the Squash and men’s hockey. England will add at least one more gold medal to their tally in the men’s doubles squash, as the final will see an all-English affair.

Meanwhile, the home pair of Sarah-Jane Perry and Alison Waters will be looking for a shock win in the women’s doubles against Joelle King and Amanda Murphy. The final gold medal will be awarded at the University of Birmingham, as Australia and India battle in the men’s hockey final.

What To Expect At The Closing Ceremony?

The curtain will come down on an unforgettable couple of weeks in the Second City tonight, as Alexander Stadium hosts the Closing Ceremony. The event will hand over the Commonwealth Games to Victoria, as the Australian city hosts the next competition in four years’ time. However, there will be another Brummie party to end the games, with the line-up for the Closing Ceremony revealed on Monday.

Local legends UB40 are among the standout artists announced to perform at Alexander Stadium, while Brummie Beverley Knight has also been announced. Other acts that will be performing at the huge party on Monday include Laura Mvula, Jorja Smith, and The Selector.

It promises to be an epic party to bring the curtain down on a famous couple of weeks in Birmingham, but thankfully the legacy of the games will remain for years to come. A sign of that will be evident in Centenary Square, as the Raging Bull will be staying put for at least another month, but petitions already appear to be demanding for his stay to be extended, as the star from the Opening Ceremony has undoubtedly become one of the big tourist attractions in the city.
