A History of Bonfire Night

The Gunpowder Plot Plotters

Bonfire Night, also referred to as Guy Fawkes Night, takes place on the 5th of November every year, marking the anniversary of the failed ‘Gunpowder Plot’ of 1605. Thirteen men, including the infamous Guy Fawkes, plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London in order to assassinate King James I, who had refused to grant greater religious tolerance to Roman Catholics.

An anonymous letter sent to Lord Monteagle, oftentimes attributed to Francis Tresham (the brother-in-law of the aforementioned member of the House of Lords), warned of the plot and led directly to Guy Fawkes’ capture and the discovery of thirty-six barrels of gunpowder. Had the plot succeeded, it would have wiped out the majority of the British political scene, including a large proportion of the English royal family, the aristocracy, the leading gentry and many merchants. It would also have demolished Westminster Palace, much of the Abbey and likely the surrounding houses.

‘Guy Fawkes Night’ therefore often involves a bonfire, upon which an effigy of the eponymous Guy Fawkes is sometimes burned, and fireworks are set off, celebrating the failure of the conspiracy.
