Boxing in England can be traced back to well over a century. The sport which requires immense raw strength and exceptional technique has played a prominent role in British sporting culture since the late 1800s.

In modern times the fights seem to consistently grow larger in terms of prize money and viewership. This not only creates a demand for more huge fights to be scheduled, but it inspires people to take up the sport which creates a demand for more boxing gyms up and down the country.

The major fights inspire newcomers

Big fights take place every single year and they all help to increase the amount of people in England actively participating in the sport. The fight of the century this year between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk is sure to create a boom in the uptake of boxing that has not been seen for years. The Ukrainian is the favourite for the bout as of boxing betting tonight offered at 4/5 to down the Gypsy King.

Many fans across the country will undoubtedly be inspired to get involved at a local boxing club after seeing a British fighter compete in arguably the biggest fight in the sport’s history

There is an abundance of local venues in and around Brum where developing boxers can practice their craft. Here we have assembled some of the best clubs in or within a short travelling distance of the city, who can provide an ideal platform for the birth of future fighting champions.

Combat Sports Centre

Combat Sports Centre is one of the most complete boxing gyms in the West Midlands. It is located in Solihull which means it is just a short journey away for any Birmingham boxing enthusiasts.

It offers classes and coaching to all levels of experience and ages and is owned by a former champion himself Paul Gilmore – who won titles at the National and International levels.

The centre is focused on teaching boxing techniques, discipline and resilience. It is an environment in which serious boxers can develop all areas of their game and be trained for competition fights.

The club is also extremely versatile in the fighting styles that it teaches. Kickboxing and mixed martial arts are crafts that can be learned at the venue as well as standard boxing.

Combat Sports Centre ticks all of the boxes for people who are looking to get involved with a range of combat sports.

However, some people may prefer a more optimised experience at a location where only one fighting sport is focused on, and we have found the perfect solution for those individuals in the Birmingham region.

D&A Boxing School of Excellence

D&A Boxing School of Excellence offers a true specialised experience for fans of boxing who want to participate in the sport themselves. It is located well within the city in Stirchley which is ideal for local Birmingham residents.

The club was opened in 2006 to provide much-needed facilities for developing boxers to hone their skills alongside high-level coaches.

The venue offers a variety of classes and one-on-one coaching is also frequently available for attendees which can allow fighters to improve much quicker.

Like Combat Sports Centre it is owned by a veteran of combat sports. Anthony Hull is the man who owns and started the entire venture and he has competed in boxing, MMA and even karate events all over the world.

Ultimately, both of these clubs are backed by individuals and coaches who have a wealth of experience in combat sports. Those with a broad interest which spans across fighting sports may prefer Combat Sports Centre just outside of Birmingham, while for pure boxers D&A is undoubtedly the place to go in Brum.
