Brilliant Things To Do In Birmingham

0

Birmingham is a decent place to have a day (or night) out, whether a local or a tourist, and there are plenty of things to get up to in the United Kingdom’s second city. Birmingham boasts an incredible culinary landscape, fantastic pubs and many cultural experiences due to its rich heritage. It also has more canals than Venice, which I am sure you have heard about many times before, especially at pub quizzes.

With so much on offer in Birmingham, We Love Brum figured it would be handy if we put together an excellent little guide to some of the best things to see and do. Enjoy!

NQ64 Arcade Bar

So, we will start with two hobbies close to my heart: video games and drinking. NQ64 has 33 arcade machines for avid gamers to get their hands on and 10 retro consoles. They also have a full-functioning Laser Quest arena in the basement, especially aimed towards adults.

“You can now drag all those old school birthday party memories into the present, throw in some booze, a neon splattered arena, and pew pew pew to victory against your mates.”

Alongside this comes gaming-themed cocktails inspired by old-school games such as Crash Bandicoot and Donkey Kong and an excellent wine menu sourced from London-based wine specialists Top Cuvee.

Digbeth Dining Club

The Digbeth Dining Club has been going for years now. It has become so popular that they now tour The Midlands, popping up in places such as Staffordshire and the East Midlands. The original location is still the best for me, as it is where it all began and has been the start of so many excellent pop-up restaurants’ journey into becoming bonafide top-tier brick-and-mortar restaurants.

There is always a good vibe with the tunes here, with a D.J. or a local artist typically providing the soundtrack for the evening. They also have a selection of craft beers and cocktails available, and then there is the food. There are many options, whether it is a burger you crave, Mexican food or a dessert. There will always be something you will want to get your gnashers around at the Digbeth Dining Club, and it’s guaranteed to be a baning meal, whatever stand you decide to patron.

Symphony Hall

Officially opened by the late Queen Elizabeth II on 12 June 1991, Birmingham’s Symphony Hall is not synonymous with the city’s cultural scene. They have a wide range of shows here, from theatre productions to performances from some of the world’s most recognised orchestras.

The venue seats over 2000 people and holds over 270 events a year. Upcoming events include an appearance from TVT.V. show presenter and comedian Leigh Francis and the Royal Birmingham Ballet, who are performing a show to the tune of the legendary composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, maestro of the glorious scores for Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.

Sea Life Centre

The mesmerising aquatic attraction, the Sea Life Centre, is next to the Symphony Hall. Every time I visit here, I am being transported to another universe. The Seas Life Centre boasts ten different types of aquariums, and you can see and learn about many other aquatic species here, from clownfish, Penguins and even sharks!

The Sea Life Centre also has a new state-of-the-art aquatic mammal rescue facility designed to emulate the natural habitat that marine mammals are accustomed to. This is a great day out for the family or anyone fascinated with the ocean.

The Mail Box

The Mailbox is one of the U.K.’s most prominent mixed-use destinations outside London, making it an ideal choice for office headquarters (Not that you are going to Birmingham to visit offices for fun, don’t worry, there is more to it). Located in the heart of Birmingham City Centre, it’s widely recognised as its premium lifestyle destination.

With its vibrant 24/7 atmosphere, Mailbox offers a unique environment for both work and play. It’s been voted one of Birmingham’s best spots to unwind, boasting easy access to Canalside dining and some of the city’s finest retail and leisure amenities.

There is an art gallery here to marvel at, high-end tailors and even a spa. As we mentioned previously, people come here mainly because of the brilliant bars and restaurants. Gas Street Social and Chez Mal are two personal favourites of mine. If a movie and a Nados are more up your alley, then the Mailbox can also provide that for you. It is Brums best multi-purpose location.

The Bull Ring

Now, for the shopaholics, the Bull Ring will become your new paradise. The showpiece at the Bull Ring is the Selfridges; over the years, they have had a wide range of exciting products imported from overseas. Being able to purchase Lucky Charms cereal again after they left the U.K. shelves years prior was a significant moment for me in my late teens (I didn’t have the most exciting teenage years).

All the usual high street chains have set up shops in The Bull Ring and a few more unique boutique stores. Most of our shopping is done online these days, but when trying to put together a perfect outfit, nothing can beat going to a well-equipped mall and then a few drinks afterwards to round off the day.

Ghetto Golf

For mini golf enthusiasts who fancy a few rounds with a bit of a twist, Ghetto Golf is a fantastic option. Ghetto Golf is a different take on the classic game with cocktails and beers on offer, and some of the course design is more adult-themed.

It’s a silly and entertaining twist on a game that is already a lot of fun anyway and is a fantastic way to spend some time with friends and, of course, as expected, does host some Stag and Hen parties due to the theme of the location.

Cadbury World

For the chocoholics, you can tour the world-renowned home of chocolatier Cadbury. This is more of an activity for big kids and families with young children, but it’s fascinating to learn about where it all began and how they became the giants they are today. Seeing how the chocolate is made is an eye-opening (and mouth-watering) experience.

The tour with the afternoon tea option is a bestseller, and they, of course, hand out some free chocolatey goodies while you participate in the tour.

Birmingham: Victorian Canals to Today’s City Walking Tour

History buffs can embark on a journey through Birmingham’s rich history and vibrant present with a guided walking tour along its iconic canals. Visitors are immediately immersed in the city’s atmosphere, starting at the modern Library of Birmingham in the newly renovated Centenary Square.

As you stroll through Centenary Square, you can take a moment to appreciate the public art installations that offer glimpses into Birmingham’s industrial past, a testament to its role as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Surrounding buildings showcase the fusion of arts and commerce that defines Birmingham today, setting the stage for an exploration.

Continuing through the International Convention Centre, visitors are treated to the awe-inspiring Symphony Hall (as mentioned previously). Delving into the history of Birmingham’s canal system, which was pivotal in the city’s development during the 18th century, is a fun experience, and it’s a superb way to take in some of the city’s best landmarks. Seeing how these historic waterways have been revitalised and discovering their diverse modern uses is a fantastic way to submerse yourself in Brummy culture.

Venturing into Brindleyplace, marvel at the Victorian-era architecture that reflects the city’s transformation into a model urban centre. This era was marked by the Civic Gospel, with initiatives to improve education, provide clean water, and address housing issues.

Throughout the tour, the juxtaposition of old and new architecture becomes apparent, highlighting Birmingham’s seamless integration of tradition and modernity. From the bustling city squares to the tranquil canal paths, visitors gain a deeper appreciation for the city’s evolution.

Tour Details:

  • Tour guide providing expert commentary
  • Audio receivers available for enhanced experience
  • Tourist guidebook included for further exploration of Birmingham’s attractions

Catch A Game At Villa Park

If Premier League football is what you fancy, Birmingham is home to one of the division’s current best sides, Aston Villa. Watching a football match in the U.K. is a special experience, and it is incredible wherever you go to catch a game. Still, the Premier League is on another level when it comes to the quality of football on display.

Villa Park has a wide range of match day options and packages, from corporate seating and private boxes, and of course (and in my opinion, the best way to watch a game sitting in one of the main stands with the fans and soaking up the atmosphere.

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery

Birmingham Museums Trust is a beacon of culture. With a world-class collection under its care, the Trust serves as a custodian of Birmingham’s rich history while fostering connections that bridge the past, present, and future, igniting creativity within and to those who visit.

The Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery is housed within a magnificent Grade II* listed building that has graced Chamberlain and Victoria Square since 1885, welcoming countless visitors.

Since March 2020, the Museum has faced closures, partly driven by the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Essential maintenance initiatives were undertaken, spanning the Grade II* listed museum structure and the broader Council House complex.

As a result of these ongoing maintenance endeavours, the Museum operates on a partial basis. Notably, the Gas Hall, a Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery segment, remains open to the public, hosting the Victorian Radicals exhibition.

Plans are underway to gradually reopen various historic civic spaces within the Museum, including the Round Room, Industrial Gallery, and the Edwardian Tearooms. Anticipated for completion in time for the summer holidays of 2024, we expect the grand reopening of these spaces to be a massive hit with the public, so it may be worth planning if you plan to visit in the summer once everything is back in full swing.

Watch Live Music

Birmingham is the birthplace of heavy metal in many people’s eyes. Spawning iconic rock groups such as Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden is why this opinion is widely regarded as fact. I agree with the statement and, of course, hold no local bias.

There are several locations to choose from, but some of my favourites include The Actress & Bishop, a renowned destination in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter, famed for live music performances and a vibrant atmosphere. Notable for its Blues Night and open mic events.

The Jam House, which was founded by Jools Holland, is a venue in St. Paul’s Square and is a haven for jazz, blues, and rock fans. It prides itself on supporting local talent and hosting legendary performers like Chaka Khan and Jools Holland. The Brasshouse is another great shout for a gig; located in Gas Street Basin, this beloved pub offers live music, karaoke nights, and Sunday Social events. Its historic charm and good beer make it a favourite spot for locals.

Last but certainly not least is The Hare & Hound. Situated in Kings Heath, it is also a banger. This cosy venue offers live music every night and hosts quiz nights on Wednesdays. Known for its fine cocktails and laid-back atmosphere, it’s a popular spot for locals.

For more detailed information on where to watch the best live music in Birmingham, you can check out Counteract.co for venue guides and information on some of the latest shows and best up-and-coming local talent.

The Think Tank

The Think Tank has a little bit for people of all ages. You can explore MiniBrum, a captivating miniature city designed especially for children, where young explorers can unleash their imagination and creativity. Visitors can also wander through the interactive outdoor Science Garden and immerse themselves in a world of scientific wonders. Learning about Birmingham’s industrial heritage is also a highlight, as you can marvel at vintage steam engines, trains, cars, and planes from bygone eras. You should also take the chance to meet their resident dinosaur; he’s very cool!

You can also step into the state-of-the-art 4K Planetarium and embark on an unforgettable journey through the cosmos, gazing at the stars above. The Planetarium is famous amongst visitors to The Think Tank, so be aware that space is limited. During peak times, tickets for Planetarium shows may sell out quickly, and according to the Museum’s website, visitors are advised to purchase them at the ticket desk upon arrival.

West Side & Broad Street

Broad Street is one of the city’s most lively entertainment destinations, offering many experiences for visitors to enjoy. There are cosy canalside bars to bustling international club nights; Broad Street has something for everyone. Dive into the lively atmosphere at Walkabout, Reflex Birmingham, Pop World, or indulge in a cocktail at The O Bar or Revolution Birmingham.

For those seeking a taste of Indian food, some of the best spots in the city are located here. The flavours of India at Pushkar or the young, tantalising Punjabi cuisine at East East are staples of the Birmingham food scene, and their reputations as top-class eateries are well-earned.

Broad Street boasts plenty of diverse restaurants if Indian food isn’t what you are craving. Some notable mentions include Aria Restaurant at Hyatt Regency Birmingham, the Hampton by Hilton if you want to treat yourself and your partner to a night of luxury, or savour Italian delicacies at Del Villaggio.

For movie buffs, Cineworld Cinema Broad Street offers the latest blockbusters in state-of-the-art theatres. And for those feeling lucky, Grosvenor G Casino provides an exciting gaming experience alongside great food and entertainment. It’s an adult’s paradise, and there were plenty of spots for a Bossman kebab once the night was done and it was time to head home.

404 Escape: Survival Escape Rooms

Highly regarded as Birmingham’s premier escape room experience, visitors are invited to take on an adventure. Locked into meticulously crafted scenarios, participants are challenged to test their wits and resilience against fear and suspense. There are varying difficulty levels, too, so first-timers can handle being overwhelmed.

In teams of 2-7 members, players must navigate through intricate puzzles and challenges, utilising their collective skills to unravel the mysteries and escape the confines of their chosen scenario. With themes ranging from horror to suspense, each room promises a unique and exhilarating experience.

Unlike traditional escape rooms, this experience offers a heightened level of immersion, with fewer padlocks and more mechanical puzzles to solve. Interactions with non-player characters add depth to the narrative, while personal tasks and story-driven elements further enhance the adventure.

That brings us to the conclusion of this comprehensive guide for things to see and do in Birmingham. Birmingham is a widely underrated destination in the United Kingdom, and there is far more here than meets the eye. Brum is a little gem tucked away in the middle of the country.

I hope you have as much fun exploring the museums, listening to music, eating, and drinking at the local bars and restaurants as I did.
