It’s happened to us all. You’ve spent the morning running around from shop to shop and haven’t had time to eat. Or perhaps you’ve exhausted the last box of cereal in the house and are looking for a more luxurious breakfast. Luckily, there are bakeries all around Birmingham to solve your carb cravings! With such a diverse range of cultures in the city, there are baked goods from around the globe as well as the more familiar ones to be found. From sweet treats to savoury snacks, sourdough to sponge cake, here are some of our tops picks for some of the best bakeries in the city.

Pause Birmingham

Cinnabuffins. That’s cinnamon roll muffins for the uninitiated, and they are the utterly mouth-watering creation of Pause coffee shop and bakery in King’s Heath. Starting out as pop-up that spent well over a year residing in Stirchley, Pause moved to its permanent location this year and has since gained a lot of love from the locals. And for good reason too.

Sharing Kings Court with other indie darlings such as The MilkCake Man and Levain and Cherry, this little bakery is in good company. Alongside their speciality coffee you can order huge cookies stuffed with chocolate bars or in an ice cream sandwich, or treat yourself to one of their brownies or blondies, topped with all kinds of goodies. But let’s be honest, if you’re going to visit for one thing, it’s the cinnabuffins.

Bread Collection

Located directly opposite Snow Hill train station in the Great Western Arcade, Bread Collection is a great place to grab breakfast on your way to work. It is an independent artisan bakery that specialises in French and British baked goods, often blending the two cuisines together to create all new flavours. Using flour sourced from the Cotswolds and France, their bread is baked fresh daily, and you’re spoiled for choice on what type to get: they bake over 40 types of bread! From classic baguettes to date and pecan sourdough, this place really lives up to its name.

If you’d prefer a small but tasty snack, they also serve pastries, cakes, and patisseries that are made by their in-house pastry chef. For the savoury lovers they have various quiches as well as some very cheesy croissants. If you have a sweet tooth, then you’re even more spoiled for choice. The French mille-feuille and pain au chocolat are balanced out with a good number of British classics like gingerbread men and millionaire shortbread, but the tarts have got to be the feather in their cap.

Silver Tree Bakery

If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into a fairy tale cottage for tea and cake, Silver Tree Bakery is just the spot for you. Down a country road in Sutton Coldfield, there stands a large wooden tent surrounded by picnic tables and trees, and inside the little elves serve everything from Danish pastries and fruity tarts to sausage rolls and cheese-covered breakfast buns.

Although stocked with the some of the best foods all year round, this place lights up at Christmas. Literally. The fairy lights surrounding the bakery adds to the magical feel, and you will be sure to find some seasonal snacks to help Santa on his way.

The Hive Café and Bakery

The Hive is a fantastic community hub in the Jewellery Quarter. It can be found in a grade II listed historic building that was once a jewellery manufactory. As part of the Ruskin Mill Trust charity, it acts as a place of both socialising and learning for young people with learning difficulties. Upstairs houses Argent College, at which these young people have the opportunity to work on the rooftop micro farm and the in-house kitchen to supply the café and bakery with different food every day.

The café and bakery themselves are open to the public and are stocked with goodies made from in-season produce, organic and vegetarian. The bakery always has a selection of freshly made bread and handmade cakes, and you never know what you’ll find when you walk in.

Wheat Bakehouse

Formerly known as Orientee Bakery, Wheat Bakehouse is an online bakery with a collection point in Aston and the option to get deliveries straight to your door, so it’s perfect for those of us unable (or unwilling) to travel but who still want to enjoy the finer tastes in life! With a focus on fresh, local ingredients, they care for the quality of their produce and like to put effort into traditional recipes. The sourdough loaves are fermented for at least 36 hours, ensuring the perfect flavour, and everything is made from scratch.

The menu itself changes with the seasons, and throughout the week, so there is often something new to try. The old classics include sourdough loaves, focaccia, and croissants, but don’t think it’s a simple as that. The charcoal sourdough is an incredible sight to behold, and the sweet pastries are even more impressive. Their Danish uses seasonal fruits, so you’ll get a new experience from summer to winter, and the doughnut (and cronut) options will leave you anxious for the next drop off.

Rose Bakery

Good food comes from all kinds of places. On the main road in Sparkbrook, there’s a small, unassuming bakery and supermarket that is hiding some tasty treats. Rose Bakery is a well-loved Middle Eastern food spot that always has freshly baked goods on the shelves that fill the shop with a delicious aroma. It may be hard to spot right away, but once you find it you should definitely take a peek inside.

They have a variety of different flatbreads, all equally fragrant and fluffy, as well as sweet snacks you might not find at your local bakery such as kleicha, baklava, and kunafa rolls. It’s a place like nowhere else, and it displays the fantastic foods that people from different cultures have brought over to the melting pot that is Birmingham.
