Student accommodation can be a great way to live and study, but it is important to take steps to keep your rental secure and free from damage. Any damages to the property can be costly, so seeking renter insurance is vital during the study season.

When you pay a deposit to your landlord, you will be made aware that ‘fair wear and tear’ will not be taken out of your deposit money. However, damages such as broken windows and locks, holes in the walls and torn curtains and carpets are all classed as damage which will be taken out of your deposit money.

Are student rental properties always at risk of damage?

Despite reputation, students can be excellent tenants who look after and treat their rented property with respect. Unfortunately, student properties can be at a higher risk of break-ins and property damage. Students who take proper precautions to protect their rental property will likely see less damage done.

Study Inn’s advice to students for safely securing a student property is to always lock your doors and windows behind you when leaving your property and/or going to bed. Make sure you’re keeping your keys and keycards hidden away and never share them or access codes with other people.

Valuables will attract thieves so ensure you leave wallets, laptops, headphones, jewellery etc out of sight. To take an extra step, consider marking your valuable items with a UV pen. This will help police identify your items, should a break-in occur.
